Musical Notes ♫♬ (Archive)

Three things are taken into consideration:  What is the theme of the day?  Are there special activities taking place during worship (baptisms, installations, special celebrations etc.)?  Where does the hymn happen during the service (gathering, closing etc.)?  The theme of the day is the overall deciding factor for me when I choose hymns.  I study the lessons and the prayer of the day for that particular Sunday.  Then I consult Sundays and Seasons, published by Augsburg Fortress, which gives a selection of suggested hymns for the week as well as expanded ideas for the theme.  My final decisions are made based on text and tune.  For example, the Hymn of the Day should be our 'amen' to the great preaching that we hear every Sunday and our Sending Hymn should be a nice closer that ties in the theme of the day while also sending us forth with the love of God in our heart.  The ELW has a vast array of hymns to choose from that are both contemporary and traditional.  When you have a moment, flip through the hymnal and take a look at some of the incredible music being offered.  There is a terrific index in the back that arranges the music by topic and each hymn has a corresponding heading in the upper right corner.  In your own personal study of the Word or if you feel like your day needs a little something extra you may want to add a hymn study.

As a special note, our children will be learning special hymns during Sunday School.  Perhaps you will hear the sweet sounds of children filling the air singing, "Jesus loves me this I know, for the Bible tells me so, little ones to him belong, they are weak but He is strong".

  • Malachi 4:1-6

5Lo, I will send you the prophet Elijah before the great and terrible day of the LORD comes. 6He will turn the hearts of parents to their children and the hearts of children to their parents, so that I will not come and strike the land with a curse.
