Music is a vital part of our ministry and our worship experience at Gustavus Adolphus Lutheran Church. Music, especially singing, has always been the link and a common connection as the people of God The gathered congregation not only sings in one voice, but its song is added to the song of the church throughout the world and throughout the ages. In Life Together Dietrich Bonhoeffer wrote, “It is the voice of the church that is heard in singing together. It is not I who sing, but the church. However, as a member of the church, I may share in its song.” (Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Life Together, Minneapolis: Fortress Press, 1996, 68)
And still today, as the church, we continue our song; therefore, it is my pleasure to introduce Cantor Dwight Weaver, who has received the unanimous recommendation from the Search Committee to serve as our next Minister of Music! A Cantor is a respected musician and teacher who leads and supports the worship life of a church and helps a congregation in singing praises and laments to God.
Dwight has lived fully into the title of Cantor and we are thrilled to have him join Gustavus Adolphus. He understands the vital role of music, especially singing, in offering praise and prayer, proclaiming the Word of God, and connecting God’s people. Dwight has served Lutheran and Episcopal parishes in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, where he planned worship, led diverse assembly song, conducted vocal and handbell choirs, and held administrative duties.
As a lifelong Lutheran and active member of the wider church, Dwight has participated in the ELCA Youth Gathering, Theological Education with Youth, and the Lutheran Summer Music Academy and Festival (LSM). At LSM, he served as an intern for the chapel choir and worship team.
Dwight holds bachelor’s degrees in sacred music and music education from Lebanon Valley College, a diploma in music education from the Liszt Academy Kodály Institute, a master’s in choral conducting from Westminster Choir College, and is currently pursuing a master’s in voice pedagogy at Westminster Choir College. We are thrilled to continue our song with Cantor Dwight Weaver.
Peace of Christ,
Matthew D. O’Rear, Theologian in Residence and Chair, Minister of Music Search Committee
